The sidewalk people tote their treasures wherever they go
Looking for food scraps to eat
Coffee cups to ask with
Plastic bottles for a refund at the recycling station
Once these men and women may have been soldiers
students waiters shopkeepers
Once they had more than a trash bag of treasure
Some people forget their loneliness with riches
Perhaps once the pavement people did but no longer,
For it is with their treasure that they survive
Loneliness is another matter.
Today I was walking down Telegraph and I saw a homeless man feeding his dog part of his meal (which appeared to be a gift from a kind stranger). I just found the moment a very poignant one.
